Kalanchoe thyrsiflora, also known as the paddle plant, flapjacks, dog tongue, or desert cabbage, is a succulent plant with the following characteristics:
Appearance
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is a drought-tolerant plant with large, fleshy, paddle-shaped leaves that are covered in a white powdery bloom. The leaves are grayish-green with red margins, and the leaf edges are extended upward to minimize sun exposure.
Flowers
In the spring, Kalanchoe thyrsiflora produces fragrant yellow flowers that grow in dense clusters on tall flower stalks.
Growth
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora is native to South Africa and can grow up to 30 inches tall. When planted in containers, it grows much shorter, typically to 10 inches tall.
Care
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora prefers loose, porous, well-drained soil and should be allowed to dry out between waterings. It should be protected from intense afternoon sun in very hot summer regions.
Propagation
New plants can be propagated from the small, immature plants that grow around the base of a mature Kalanchoe thyrsiflora.
Combining with other plants
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora combines well with other succulents and plants that have relatively low water requirements.
